How To Install Bifold Doors - Step By Step

Introduction

If you’re looking for a new set of bifold doors for your home, one way to cut down on the cost is to install them yourself. Here at AluFold, we’d recommend against this. It’s always best to hire a professional, or you risk causing damage and unnecessary hassle.

However, we understand that some people love a good DIY project and are happy to accept the extra work. If you’re looking to save money or just enjoy getting stuck in, here’s a brief guide on how to install bifold doors.

Preparation

Before you get started on your bifold doors installation, make sure the area is clear. Have all your tools within arms reach and double-check the dimensions of the entranceway. Make sure the brickwork is suitably levelled and that all the installation pieces are present, you won’t want to be hunting around for a missing screw at a crucial moment. Also, check the weather report; being lashed with a sudden rainstorm mid-installation is not fun.

Assembling The Frame

Next, it’s time to put the frame together. Attach the jams, fix the cills into two sections, and then connect them to create a square. Use a tape measure to check it’s perfectly square; if not, make any alterations.

Installing The Frame

At this point, you’ll make the final decision on which direction your new bifold doors will open. Assemble the top track with your preferred opening type, then secure it in the frame. Install the frame squarely in the entranceway with the cill facing out and permanently fix the top track. Follow this up by fixing the weather seals and fitting the drop bolts.

Attaching The Doors

You’ll need two people present for this stage. Otherwise, you won’t be able to adjust your bifold doors without the risk of dropping them. Start with the pivot door; use a drill to fix the hinges and pivot block to the doors and track, then lift the door panel onto the bottom pivot and place it in a suitable position.

Follow this up by fitting the middle doors, and check that your doors move and fit properly. If not, use an Allen key to adjust them until you’re confident they’re in place. Finish up by installing the lock, handles, door stop and magnetic catches as per the instructions. Congratulations, you've completed a DIY installation of bifold doors and have a beautifully new addition to your home.

We must reiterate however, that it’s always best to get a trained professional to install your new doors. It can be very rewarding to put them together yourself, and can reduce the cost of installing bifold doors, but it can also be incredibly time-consuming. If things go wrong, it can also be frustrating and wind up being more expensive than hiring someone.
