What Is A Roof Lantern?
Introduction
Roof lanterns are an ideal alternative to traditional conservatories. They’ll increase the amount of light in a room, and make your home brighter and airier. But if you’re unfamiliar with the term, what exactly is a roof lantern?
Brighter Homes
Lantern roofs, or roof lanterns as they’re sometimes called, are a type of glass installation. They’re fitted exclusively on flat roofs and protrude upwards. Lantern roofs are normally triangular, so try picturing a glass pyramid and you won’t be far off. You may also have heard them referred to as ‘skylights,’ but strictly speaking this is a different type of product. Skylights more closely resemble regular windows and sit flush with the roof instead of protruding. The two are similar, but lantern roofs allow more light in. You’ll often see them on top of extensions and flat-roof bungalows.
Roof Lanterns Through The Ages
Roof lanterns are simultaneously old-fashioned and timeless. They’ve been used for centuries; one of the oldest in Europe was constructed in 1059 and pre-dates the Battle Of Hastings by seven years! However, they’re also very popular with homeowners and there’s a reason the basic look hasn’t changed much.
It all comes down to the extra light. Unlike standard windows, roof lanterns allow light in from multiple angles, allowing for a much brighter home. Traditional roof lanterns were made with wooden frames, but during the Victorian era, these were gradually phased out in favour of metal ones. Nowadays, all roof lanterns are made of metal.
They have a few modern upgrades that would seem like sorcery to any time-travelling architects from the Victorian period. They can be fitted with electric openings for easier operation and there are wider choices for shading options too. Modern roof lanterns also come with double glazing as standard, so they’re warmer, stronger and more thermally efficient.
