How Long Do Aluminium Windows Last?
Introduction
If you’re looking for the most long-lasting windows on the market, aluminium should be your first choice. It’s an inherently tough and durable metal and has a lifespan that can be measured in decades. Granted, aluminium windows tend to be more expensive than other types, but they’re more than worth the additional cost. Here’s how long you can expect them to last.
Long-Lasting Aluminium Windows
The average lifespan of an aluminium window is about 45 to 50 years. That’s an impressive figure, but it's even better when you consider the full context. Windows with UPVC frames last for about 25 to 35 years, so while they are the cheaper option, you’ll have to replace them a lot sooner.
The other popular alternative is timber windows. These can last longer than aluminium and you could get up to 60 years out of them. However, there are several drawbacks. Wooden windows are not only more expensive, but they also require extra maintenance. They’re prone to wear and tear and the maintenance bills will all add up over time, whereas aluminium requires very little upkeep.
Maintaining Aluminium Windows
One of the best ways to ensure your windows survive a long time is to do routine maintenance. You don’t need in-depth knowledge or technical expertise, it’s simply a case of cleaning them occasionally. You can read our detailed explanation on How To Clean Aluminium Windows, but in short, a quick wipe down with a non-abrasive sponge and some under-the-sink cleaning products every month can add years to them.
Otherwise, your aluminium windows won’t require any care and you can almost forget about them once installed. The frames are designed to resist severe weather and attempted break-ins, so they won’t rust, degrade, stain or scratch. They can be placed in direct sunlight and won’t fade either.
In other words, if you want windows that can last for half a century with almost no necessary upkeep, aluminium is the perfect choice of material. Admittedly, we are a little biased but there’s a reason why we decided to focus our business on aluminium. UPVC and timber windows have a lot to recommend them but aluminium is the best.
